Marketplace, 1985

Artist(s): Raoul Middleman (1935-2021)
Medium: Oil on canvas

This piece is located in the 300 Level Pratt Street Lobby.

Marketplace was first commissioned for a movie theatre on Marketplace and holds a focal point of a fountain that was once prominent during the 1960s and 1970s. Using a cohesive color palette, distinguished brushstrokes, and a peculiar perspective, Middleman composed his interpretation of the Harbor and his adolescence.

Baltimore native, Raoul Middleman emulated his life and personal experience through canvas using oils, watercolors, and pastels.

For over 50 years Raoul Middleman taught Painting and Drawing at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). This piece is on loan from MICA.
